All the backgrounds are hand painted; either digitally or with water colour. In the follwing clips, instead of telling a story, the focus is rather on catching an atmospheric moment. By using different camera movements an lighting effects, it becomes an exploration of creating a feeling of depth and space by putting the 2D painted scenes into moving pictures. All animated parts such as the butterfly and fireflies serve merely for testing purposes to experiment the interaction of characters with the landscapes.
Mount Fuji
Climbing Mount Fuji is one of the most extraordinary experiences. Mount Fuji is only accessible for hikes during the summer time and an amazing challenge to make it to the top throughout the night to catch the sunrise. During Japan's increadibly hot summer season it is hard to imagine cold temperatures on the way to the summit. This clip was inspired by my first hike on Mount Fuji. After over eight hours walking through the night, fighting tiredness, freezing cold and hunger, just to make it in time for the sunrise, I arrived to this view: we were in a cloud. The sight was no further than two metres. However instead of disappointment it was rather magical and mystical viewing over the occasional stations appearing out of the fog, a feeling hard to describe in words.
